Framed Original Signed Alfred Birdsey (1912-1996) Abstract Bermuda Watercolor Painting

This painting is a signed original watercolor on paper by listed British/Bermudian artist Alfred Birdsey (1912-1996) depicting an abstract bayside scene with sailboats and houses in serene tones of green and blue punctuated by dark lines. The modernist style of this piece would complement a midcentury aesthetic or provide an interesting juxtaposition in a more traditional interior.

The visible parts of the painting have no evidence of tears or staining (not examined out of glass). The piece is signed by the artist in the lower right corner. The painting was professionally framed at the Sandman Gallery Frame Shoppe in Meriden, CT (closed since 2017) according to a label affixed to the back of the piece. There are no chips, cracks, or large scratches in the frame’s glass. The wooden frame has a distressed gold finish with visible joinery along the top as shown as well as minor wear in some areas consistent with age and prior use.

Considered the most significant modernist painter in Bermuda during the second half of the 20^th century, Alfred Birdsey was entirely self-taught and worked mostly in watercolor and oil. He also produced works in charcoal as well as block prints and lithographs. His work was influenced by American artists Joe Jones and Douglas Kirkpatrick who served as mentors. In addition to his original works available directly from his studio at Rosecote, his family home in Bermuda’s Paget parish, Birdsey was also commissioned for a number of commercial projects, including murals and promotional artwork for the America’s Cup when it was raced from Newport, RI, to Bermuda.
