Set of 2 Framed Hand-Colored Pierre-Joseph Redouté Rose Lithographs
This set of two antique framed, hand-colored French lithographs from Pierre-Joseph Redouté's most celebrated botanical series, Les Roses, literally stopped us in our tracks! The use of more muted hues reminiscent of a sepia-toned photograph is a unique coloration of these prints and adds to their beauty. One print is titled, "Rose Thé et Penseés" (Tea Rose and Pansies), and the other is "Rose á cent feuilles et Capucines" (Hundred-petaled rose and Nasturtium). Each print is also labelled, "Peint par P.J. Redouté" and "Lith. par Courtin" (Louis-Pierre-Marie Courtin, 1788-1841). These elegant pieces of artwork are sure to merit pride of place wherever they are displayed.
In overall very good estate condition, both pieces have wear to both the print and framing as shown, consistent with their age and prior use.
Acclaimed Belgian artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) completed the 170 engravings that comprise the Les Roses series between 1817 and 1824, and they have since become the most frequently reproduced of botanical illustrations. Redouté perfected a distinctive technique of stipple engraving that highlights his masterful attention to detail in the depiction of plant specimens.
Approximate dimensions: Each piece measures 13 ¾" long x 11 ¾" wide x 3" deep overall, with an exposed print area of 9 ¼" long x 7 ½" wide.
