This beautiful vintage porcelain statue emulating blanc de chine depicts Kwan Yin (alternatively Guanyin or Kuan Yin), a deity highly venerated in Asian cultures as well as by Buddhists and Taoists. Commonly known in the West as the Goddess of Mercy and Compassion, she hears the cries of the world and aids those who are suffering. Her graceful figure is draped in elegantly flowing robes as she stands on waves, symbolizing her connection to the ocean and role as patroness of seamen. While Kwan Yin is typically portrayed holding the Sacred Vase of water in the right hand and a willow branch in the left, this statue is unusual in that Kwan Yin holds the Pearl of Light, a gift from the Dragon King for saving his son, and considered one of the most precious of all jewels. It is believed that the light constantly emitted by the pearl would permit Kwan Yin to read the sutra, even during the darkest hours of the night.

In overall excellent condition for its vintage age, this piece has no cracks, chips, or crazing. White felt is affixed to the foot of the piece as shown. The bottom of the statue reads Kuan Yin Goddess of Compassion with a production year of 1987. The oval wooden base has minimal wear. The statue was created in Taiwan based on information available at the time of acquisition.
