Product Details
This vintage Royal Crownford octagonal transferware platter features the iconic Calico chintz pattern in the less common brown colorway. This piece would look lovely on a plate wall or displayed with an eclectic brown transferware collection.
In overall very good condition for its vintage age, this piece has no large cracks, chips, or crazing. Areas of pattern overlap or color variation are part of the production process whereby tissue paper with the chintz print is hand-applied to the china to transfer the design. There is a linear mark in the glaze on the underside of the piece as shown which is not a through and through crack. The platter is incised with the number 8 and stamped Royal Crownford Staffordshire England CALICO on the bottom, dating it to the early 1960's. Initially produced for S&S Agencies of New York in 1960, pieces decorated with the 19th century chintz-inspired Calico pattern were first sold in the United States under the Royal Crownford name. As the pattern grew in popularity and distribution, manufacture was assumed by Burgess and Leigh in 1968.
Approximate dimensions: 13 ¼ inches by 10 ¼ inches.
